A Year Of Weather In Fredericton

Fredericton

What Is The Weather Like In Fredericton?

Fredericton is, according to the Koppen Climate Classification, a Dfb climate, which means a warm summer continental climate, with no major differences in precipitation during different times of year.

The D in Dfb refers to the fact that the main category it falls into is a continental climate, which is a climate where there is at least one month where the average temperature is below 18 C (64 F) and at least one month with an average temperature above 10 C (50 F), and at least one month with an average temperature below 0 C (32 F). If every month had an average temperature above 18 °C (64 °F), it would have been deemed a tropical climate (a), and if every month had an average temperature below 10 °C (50 °F), it would have been labelled as a polar climate (e). There is also a temperate climate (c) which has the same qualifications as continental, but without a month with an average temperature below freezing. It should be noted that any of these four climates, with the exception of a polar climate, also reaches a certain precipitation threshold, and if it didn’t, would be seen as a dry climate (b).

The (f) refers to there not being a massive difference between summer and winter precipitation. It should be noted that when discussing the Koppen Climate Classification, summer refers to April – September, while winter refers to October – March. The alternatives to (f) are dry summer (s) and dry winter (w), which both highlight the season with much less precipitation.

The (b) refers to the city having a warm summer, which means all months average below 22 °C (72°F), and at least four months average at least 10 °C (50°F). The others are hot summer (a), where there is a month that averages above 22 °C (72 °F), and cold summer, where only 1-3 months average above 10 °C (50 °F).

Other major cities in Canada that have a Dfb climate include Montreal, Edmonton, Ottawa, Winnipeg, Halifax, and St. John’s.
