Neptune is the eighth planet in our solar system and the fourth largest. Named after the Roman God of the sea, Neptune was discovered in 1846 by Johann Gottfried Galle after several decades had been spent using math and Uranus’s orbit to discover it.
Neptune and Uranus share a distinct blue colour, are about the same size (although Uranus is slightly bigger) and have both been visited only by Voyager 2, with Neptune’s visit in 1989. Both of which, despite being considered gas giants like Jupiter and Saturn, are also sometimes called ice giants due to how cold they are. Neptune has 16 known moons, with Triton being the biggest and most famous.

A day on Neptune is about 16 hours due to the planet’s fast rotation. Due to being approximately 30 times as far from the Sun as Earth, it takes 165 Earth years to orbit the Sun.
